(hla) Whoever said there is no harm eating burgers could not be more wrong. A woman in Liverpool just dislocated her jaw when she tried to gobble down a giant triple-decker burger, reported The Mirror today.
Nicola Peate had bitten off more than she could chew in a Man Versus Food style moment on a work night out in Liverpool at the Almost Famous restaurant.
The 25-year-old from Ormskirk in West Lancashire (United Kingdom) felt an excruciating pain when she took that bite but laughed it off until it became “unbearable” the next day. Peate described that at first, she felt as though she had a cramp in her tongue, followed by an earache and a headache. She reportedly woke up feeling really ill with “the whole side of (her head)… hurting.”
She was subsequently brought to Accident and Emergency for an x-ray, which revealed a dislocation of her jaw. According to The Mirror, the doctor had to manipulate it back into place.
The 25-year-old lady claimed that she was caught off-guard as she “didn’t think (she’d) dislocated (her jaw) – you don’t expect it to happen eating a burger”.
Although such incidents are rare, clinical director of the Emergency Department at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital where Peate was treated advised people to cut oversized food items into “more manageable chunks”, especially for those who suffer from the Elhers-danlos syndrome.
With the growing trend of consuming oversized burgers these days, it is important for people to take the necessary precautions so as not to dislocate one’s jaw just like Peate did.
